Montemor-o-Velho, Continente to Castle

March 30, 2025

Hi,

Should I say I tried and failed to visit more wonderful sites than we did last week? I would like to think that you would understand. Luso is difficult to beat. The part of that sentence that is in question is how hard I tried. I did try, but I could have tried harder. Still, we managed to make it to the Miradouro de Montemor (58MC+QQ Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal). I have been wanting to get a picture of the Continente grocery store and Castle Montemor-o-Velho where you can see both of them at the same time. I did succeed at that. It’s a panoramic photo, but at least you can see them both in the same picture…if you look closely. Click on the photo to get a better view (including pointers to where Continente and the Castle are).

The miradouro is just minutes from the grocery stores we regularly shop at, but as we tend to shop at night, we had not yet gotten up there to see the view. We made it a point this week to get up there and see what we could see. This miradouro is not on a mountain side (just a hill) so we could not see far, but we could see the town of Montemor-o-Velho and the castle, so that was a plus. Also, this miradouro is more than just a stop on the side of a road. The town has added stone landscaping-walls and a sundial along with eight picnic tables. I am sure that during the summer months, many lunches and suppers are enjoyed here.

Onyx and Opal enjoyed themselves. No one else was there, but that didn’t get them down. They wandered around, posing for photos and sniffing everywhere for messages from other dogs. The parking area for the miradouro is limited, with only room for a few cars. But as is usual in Portugal, you can always just pull over on the side of the road to park. Just take care to park away from twist and turns in the road, to be sure your car is seen by other vehicles on the road.
