Drive the Douro

May 19, 2024

Hi,

This week has been a little slow. We are all fine, but we just didn’t get out much. My A-fib keeps coming back, so I am limited on how far I can walk without getting dizzy or light-headed. I am fine when I am sitting down, but my blood pressure is too low for me to retain a standing posture for long. Thankfully, this allows me to drive without issue. Of course, I cannot get out and walk around once I get us to where we are going, but we’ll work on that.

These pictures are from a drive we took along the Douro River (the river that runs through Porto, Portugal). We did not stop much along the drive, so we don’t have a fun video of the dogs exploring a castle or anything like that. But we do have the drive video if you are interested. One place we did stop was the Miradouro de Vargelas (4MPG+8R Vale de Figueira, Portugal).

Here is the translation of the plaque:

Whoever climbs to the top of Vargelas
will be sure
that they have reached the point
most beautiful in the sky.
The Douro seen from that peak
is the Paradise promised in all
catechesis lessons.
It is enormously beautiful!
The mountains intertwine,

magnificent, to suddenly open up into valleys
tinted with the entire palette
of greens and browns that GOD
invented. And along the slopes,
the farms are painting the majestic silence white
where the river meanders.

Other than this, not much happened this week. Next week holds promise; but we will have to wait and see. As long as I am not in A-fib and the sun is also shining, we will try to get out and see something new.
