Promise fulfilled

May 10, 2026

Hi,

We managed to get out twice this past week. One big trip and one drive in the mountains. Well, both were drives in the mountains, but one took all day and the other was just a short jaunt. Both were fun.

The first trip was to find snow. Third time’s the charm, right? Well, maybe the third time. I have lost count of how many times we have attempted to get Opal to some snow and have failed. But this time, we succeeded!

We headed for Torre, where we knew there should be snow because last year in June there was still a patch of snow on the mountain top. And, we were right. But before getting there, we stopped in Castelo Bronco at a dog park so that Opal could run around without her leash (R. C 110 6000, 6000-473 Castelo Branco). If we had done this trip on a weekend, we might have found some dogs for her to play with. But we were there in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, so Opal was all alone in the dog park. Sorry Opal.

The dog park was easy to find and parking was right outside. There was a water fountain and shaded benches for the people. The dog park is right next to a large people park, so no matter what you are looking for, it is here. Even free poop bags, which didn’t seem to have been used. Sad, because the park would have been much nicer if the people weren’t animals. Sigh.

From there we headed to Covilho, where the ‘most beautiful drive in Portugal’ begins. We videoed the drive, which you can watch here (when we get the video edited). And I can attest that the drive was stunning. I don’t know who named it as the best, because I cannot choose. Every time I drive in the mountains, I am awestruck by the scenery.

Finally, we made it to the top of Torre. Opal was thrilled with the snow! We videoed that as well, so enjoy! (Again, when the video is edited.)

The trip back home was uneventful, seeing as how our husky slept all the way. Such a good girl.

On Saturday, we headed out again. Had a few stops to make and then we nipped off down a side road to see some views. No video this day, but we did manage to snap a few pictures.
