Castro do Senhor dos Desamparados

August 27, 2023

This week had been hot, so we didn’t get out much. We tinkered around the condo, cleaning and making lists of things to do next week. It was a lazy week, but I have no complaints. It’s nice to breathe and just let life flow by some times.
But today, Saturday, we couldn’t put off going to the Farmacia to pick up medicines. So, we all piled into the car and headed the four kilometers to Palmeira de Fãro. A quick stop at the Farmacia and then we continued on to Castro do Senhor dos Desamparados, less than a kilometer away. The dogs were looking forward to getting out and about, and this location seemed promising.

The parking lot was not large, but that was not important…we were the only ones there. There is an information booth on site, but it was closed – either for the season or it is simply not open on weekends. I don’t know. But the path to the ruins of the old city was easy to follow, and we soon found ourselves amongst small, round stone ruins. The houses were not large, but I guess they were big enough to keep the families safe.
All in all, it was a pleasant day. The hike to the top of the hill past the ruins to the chapel was not difficult, and the dogs enjoyed their explorations. It was a lovely day, with sunshine and a good breeze. Because this site is so close to the condo, we weren’t out long. But while we were, we all had fun. This outdoor park had no restrictions on the dogs, as usual. We were careful to make sure they didn’t disturb the site any more than a person would.
